I was lucky enough to receive my gorgeous late grandmother’s handwritten cookbook when I was home at Christmas last year, so when my 16 month old daughter and I decided to bake together this morning, we dove into the cookbook and found a simple recipe for scones. My grandmother had written in capital letters and underlined “EXCELLENT” beside the recipe, so how could we go wrong?
Penelope, my daughter and I had such a great time. We measured together, mixed together, licked the spoon together (isn’t that the best part?) and rolled out the scone dough together. They turned out beautifully and I am sure we will be having plenty of these as treats for the next few days.
Here is the recipe for you to try yourself, thanks to my grandmother, Aileen “Hazel” Nepean-Hutchison.
Plain Scones (EXCELLENT)
2 cups self-raising flour (I needed a bit more than this, but you can add more as you need)
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup caster sugar
1 tablespoon soft butter
1/2 cup water
1/2 cup milk
Mix together until a soft dough is formed.
Put dough in fridge for an hour before baking.
Roll out dough and cut into thick slices. Place on a baking tin, lined with baking paper.
Bake on 220 degrees for 12-15 minutes.
Serve warm with jam and cream! Yum, what a great Sunday treat! I am sure we made my grandmother proud!
Happy celebrating!
Kathryn
