There isn’t a lovelier sight than my gorgeous husband arriving home from work with an enormous bunch of fresh flowers, just because… I’m pleased to say that he still brings me flowers, even as we head towards celebrating a decade together.
Flowers have probably always been linked with romance, but in the Victorian era they took on a special significance as a French writer formalised the language of flowers. The type of flower, colour and presentation of the flower all had hidden meaning. I’m not at all suggesting that we go that far, but it is a lovely idea to send a subtle message the next time you happen to send flowers to someone you love. Here are the meanings behind some of our most popular flowers:
Apple Give in to temptation; let me tempt you
Apple (Blossom) I prefer you
Azalea Temperance
Baby’s Breath Posies Ours is an everlasting love

Iris A message for you
Ivy Wedded love and fidelity
Jasmine You are cheerful and graceful
Jonquil Desire; Please return my affection
Lilac (Purple) I feel the first emotions of love
Lilac (White) Youthful innocence; modest and pure emotions
Lily (Arum) Ardour

Lily (White) You are sweet; you are pure
Lotus Flower I love you still; estranged loved
