As I’m in the throws of a wedding bomboniere special at Australia Entertains, I thought it would be apt to present our Cake of the Week as wedding bomboniere.  There are so many options for presenting your wedding cake as a favor for your guests – miniature cakes, beautifully decorated cupcakes or slices of cake presented in delightful cake boxes – the options are virtually endless.  The idea of giving cake to your guests as bomboniere might be a little unconventional to some, but for those on a strict wedding budget, it’s a wonderful idea.  Here are my favourite wedding cake as bomboniere presentation ideas:

Cake favor boxes arranged to look just like a tiered wedding cake (images from Brides.com).  A gorgeous way to present your cake and favors (even if the boxes don’t contain cake).  These favor boxes can be purchased at Pink Frosting’s online bomboniere box shop.

Miniature cakes as a favor are a divine idea.  These delicate treats in a transparent bomboniere box were made by Pink Cake Box.  A classic favor that every guest will no doubt enjoy immensely!  However, this isn’t a budget bomboniere idea as elegant mini cakes can cost as much as $15 each.

Creating a DIY cupcake favor for your guests has never been easier!  Start with a simple cupcake, decorate with your favourite frosting, wrap in one of Pink Frosting’s laser cut cupcake wrappers and present in a cupcake favor box.  Voila!  Absolutely divine…

Make it Work Overtime:  Bomboniere that Doubles as a Decoration or Placecard

Glass photo coasters that double as place card holders, place card holders that can also be sent home with guests as miniature photo holders, miniature photo frames that double as seating cards, paper fans that cool guests and double as a ceremony decoration, and miniature vases that become a table decoration as well as a beautiful bomboniere, are all great examples of how to make your wedding favors work harder for you.  Some effective and super-cheap options include the Capture My Heart Photo Coasters for $3.95 for a set of two (split them to make these even more cost effective at only $1.97 each), Memories by the Dozen set of 12 miniature photo frames that double as place card holders for $19.95 (yes, only $1.66 each!), the simply stunning Shells by the Sea authentic shell placecard holders for $14.85 for a set of 6 (works out to be only $2.47 each) or the Fan Program printable kits which for $106.50 for a set of 50 work out to be only $2.13 each and are completely customisable!

DIY that Isn’t Really DIY

If you can’t craft like Martha, you can still play in the same ballpark if you buy a semi-customisable favor, like a set of CD covers which you can then personalise with a sticker and ribbon, or one of the amazing easy-to-assemble bomboniere boxes in so many shapes, styles and colours it might hurt to make a decision!  You can then fill these beauties with jelly beans, bomboniere almonds, your favourite lollies or other treats and make it your own without breaking the budget or a nail!  The set of 12 CD covers are a steal at $12.50 ($1.04 each); the black and ivory flourish bomboniere boxes with ribbon at only $1.50 each are a great price and very fashionable; or the enchanted carriage favor boxes at only $1.85 each are a fun way to say thank you and only about $2.40 each once filled with a budget-conscious candy.

Relive Your Youth for Budget Busting Brilliance

One of the cheapest but most effective ways to say thanks to guests is with a young-at-heart inspired favor.  Try the very popular candy buffet (or lolly table) filled with delicious sweets for guests to help themselves to with cheap-as-chips asian takeaway boxes as the containers; or give popcorn to your guests in fun popcorn containers for a popping great treat that won’t break the budget; and a few cheap lollypops from the $2 shop look really fun in a galvanised tin pail to give to guests.  Takeaway boxes in a set of 6 are only $7.80 (which works out to be $1.30 each); you can’t beat the authentic popcorn boxes in a set of eight for $6.95 (yes, that’s only 86c each!); and the tin pails in so many fun colours pack a great punch as a favor for just $1.85 each.

Some new, truly inexpensive baby shower favors and prizes have just arrived at Australia’s baby shower shop, Pink Frosting. Here, we’ve taken some really budget conscious favours and made them work like they’re worth millions (well, like they’re expensive anyway!)

With each of these favours, we’ve simply taken one of the budget containers available at Pink Frosting’s online baby shower shop and filled it with easy to find candy from the local supermarket. We’ve also used table mats, sheets and table runners which we had at home as the base for decoration; however, Big W and Target have great options for simple napery on a budget.

Rice paper lanterns come in so many sizes, colours and styles, but my favourite is the simple ball lantern which you can use to light and accentuate an event. For decorating a marquee to a dinner table to a dance floor, the paper lantern is the best decoration you can invest in for your event. And the best part? They can be packed down, stored and re-used for your next big shindig.

The same look can be achieved with any colour. We love monochrome for visual impact, and you can personalise the look with personalised ribbon which again, isn’t crazy expensive.

Famous Manhattan wedding planner Jung Lee has a fascination with lanterns, as I do! She’s used them to perfection here to create an impact as guests arrive at a wedding reception.

Watch your guest list.
Your guest list will dictate how large your party gets. Put alot of thought into how many people you want at the party – kids and adults included – and don’t suddenly let the guest list blow out because you feel pressure to have extra people.

Hold the party at your own house.
If you host your own party at home, then you’ll save on the cost of paying for a venue.

You don’t need to hire entertainment
There are plenty of budget ways to entertain the kids during the party without having to hire entertainers. You could set up an Arty party with cheap art/ craft supplies from the local $2 shop or you could dress up your teenage cousin as a fairy to face-paint for the kids.

Don’t overdo the favours and decorations
Theming is my favourite part, but it can be really expensive if you let it be. Be creative and pur together your own designs and make the favours with your kids. A lovely favour idea is a take-home cupcake or a cookie which the kids decorated themselves at the party.

Cook your own food and bake your own cake
This will take some time, but it will save you a fortune in catering costs. There really are no excuses not to bake your own cake with the help of The Australian Women’s Weekly Kid’s Party Cake book which should be in every home in Australia!

Make your own invitations and thank you notes
People will probably appreciate the personal touch of a handcrafted invitation or thank you note. I certainly do!
