These are just divine and so much fun as cute favours for all sorts of kids parties.

Colorful pinwheels, made out of coordinating sheets of origami or lightweight paper, stand tall against a blue summer sky, poised to whirl at the slightest suggestion of wind.

Cut a thin dowel or skewer to desired length (clip pointed end from skewer); paint and let dry. Choose two coordinating sheets of origami or lightweight paper. Cut a square from each the size you’d like your pinwheel to be (ours range from 3 to 6 inches). Use spray mount to glue squares together. Fold in half, diagonally, and in half again, then unfold. Cut along each crease two-thirds of way to square’s center, dividing each corner into two points. Bring every other point to center so points overlap. Hold in place, poke a pushpin through center, and, keeping points in place, remove pushpin. Insert a map pin into hole formed (the pushpin hole is slightly larger than circumference of the map pin, enabling the pinwheel to spin). Thread a small bead onto pin behind the wheel, and poke pin into dowel 1/2 inch from top. To prevent wood from splitting, soak the dowel tip in water before inserting map pin.

Watch your guest list.
Your guest list will dictate how large your party gets. Put alot of thought into how many people you want at the party – kids and adults included – and don’t suddenly let the guest list blow out because you feel pressure to have extra people.

Hold the party at your own house.
If you host your own party at home, then you’ll save on the cost of paying for a venue.

You don’t need to hire entertainment
There are plenty of budget ways to entertain the kids during the party without having to hire entertainers. You could set up an Arty party with cheap art/ craft supplies from the local $2 shop or you could dress up your teenage cousin as a fairy to face-paint for the kids.

Don’t overdo the favours and decorations
Theming is my favourite part, but it can be really expensive if you let it be. Be creative and pur together your own designs and make the favours with your kids. A lovely favour idea is a take-home cupcake or a cookie which the kids decorated themselves at the party.

Cook your own food and bake your own cake
This will take some time, but it will save you a fortune in catering costs. There really are no excuses not to bake your own cake with the help of The Australian Women’s Weekly Kid’s Party Cake book which should be in every home in Australia!

Make your own invitations and thank you notes
People will probably appreciate the personal touch of a handcrafted invitation or thank you note. I certainly do!

Your child needn’t be a mini Monet to have a blast at an art party. Gather some pals and get the creative juices and fun flowing by setting up one or all of these art stations in your living room or garden.

* Offer face painting: Designate an area where kids can get their faces, arms, feet painted by an adult or, if kids are older, by the “artist” in the bunch.

* Create a mural: Cover a large table with butcher paper and, in big block letters, write “Happy Birthday” or any other message the guest of honour wishes, and invite each guest to color in letters and add drawings around the message.

* Frame the moment: Take a Polaroid of each guest for him or her to keep. Or take group photos. Then give each guest a small frame to decorate. Supply stickers, pens, glue, shells and beads and let kids create fabulous frames for their photos.

* Make custom shirts: Buy a few packages of children’s white T-shirts and an array of fabric markers and pens. Give kids a keepsake shirt and let them decorate it. But be sure to set up in an area where permanent marker won’t make its way to your favourite furnishings.

* Art and Craft Projects: there are some great inexpensive arty and crafty project kits available now. Try Pink Frosting’s Paint a Pot kits or our necklace beading kits, which are very reasonable and loads of fun.

Finish it all off by letting the kids decorate their own cupcake with lots of fun lollies, decorations and frosting colours!
