I remember a time when a few cheap balloons from the supermarket and a store bought sponge cake were enough to signify a party.  These days it’s very different and that is a great thing.  We’re becoming more creative with our party themes, favours and decorations and we’re celebrating in style!  As it’s not unusual for party planners to be given budgets to rival weddings for children’s birthday parties and other celebrations, we thought it was time to give you some tips to create a celebrity-worthy party without the crazy budget.

Australia’s number one party decorations shop Pink Frosting has been involved in birthday parties, christenings and baby showers to rival any party given by Britney Spears, Elton John or Tom Cruise that have the budget of a wedding and the styling to match.  But our favourite celebrations are ones that are heart-felt and match the budget that fits the family.  Pink Frosting would hate to see anyone overspend on a party and then have a debt to pay.  The Pink Frosting team offers some great party planning tips to help you host your party like the stars but without over-spending:

1. Everyone loves candy! One of the key trends of the moment is a candy bar where you buy lots of different kinds of lollies and assemble them in different containers and lay them out on a table.  Give all of your guests a lolly bag and let them scoop in their favourite treats.  Celebrities are using Dessert Bar specialists like Amy Atlas to create wonderful candy bars for their events, but you can get inspiration for the colours online and then create a fun candy bar yourself.
2. Hold the party at home.  One of the biggest expenses for any event is the venue hire, so if you hold the party at home, you’re already on your way to creating a more budget-friendly party.  You also get to decorate over many days, rather than having a small space of time to get ready at a hired venue.
3. Have the guests decorate their own cakes!  Suri Cruise’s recent birthday party was a cupcake themed party where the kids decorated their own cupcakes.  This is seriously one of the best ideas for entertaining kids at a party and you don’t even need to decorate a cake yourself!  There’s no reason why this also wouldn’t work for adult celebrations like bridal showers or hens parties – give the guests a theme and ask them to decorate their own cakes in the theme.  Fun!
4. You don’t need to hire entertainment.  These days, your iPod can do most of the work for you.  With a little bit of work and the Genius tool, you can create a fun music list that suits the theme of the party and makes everyone get into the celebratory mood.
5. Balloons are making a come-back!  Big bulbous balloons and lanterns are the best way to create a beautiful party atmosphere and you won’t break the bank.  Go overboard with hundreds of helium filled balloons (do this yourself with a hired helium canister) and hanging lanterns.  You seriously won’t spend more than $100 filling the ceilings of most rooms this way. Add some paper bunting around the outside of the walls, and voila – you have a spectacular party space.
6. Party favours don’t have to be expensive.  They are a great idea because they are a reminder to your guests of the fun they had at the celebration.  Stores like www.PinkFrosting.com.au and Baby Showers Australia have hundreds of options for favours under $5.00 each and include personalised lollipops, customised candy and fun practical gifts.

Here are some ideas to get your creative juices flowing.

1.  Don’t use numbers, use locations, books or other items that have meaning for you!  Name your tables after places you have visited, streets you have lived on or musicians you love.  We love this example from Jesse Leake Photography where the couple took the idea even further and took polaroids of themselves holding street names.  Fun!

3.  Create vintage style table numbers by using pretty frames, lacey paper and glitter pens.  This gorgeous idea can also be easily created on your computer and printed at home for a fun look without breaking the bank.  We love the baroque frames at Pink Frosting’s wedding shop which would work perfectly for these table number creations.   Image Bridal Cookie.

• Cover your favourite books or photo albums with your table numbers, so once guests have found their table they can enjoy browsing through the books which have meaning for the bride and groom;
• If you’re hosting a Las Vegas style wedding, use playing cards as your table numbers – simply stick a round sticker with the table number in the centre, or you could name each table after your cards – Ace of Spades = table one etc;

I’m predicting that Australian families will be celebrating their Christmas in 2010 with a return to the sparkling rhapsody of Christmastimes past – a nod to traditional colours of red, green and gold or sparkling Aussie beach and country colours of sand, icy blues, and shimmering eucalypt greens.  With Christmas just 50 days away, many families are already planning their Christmas table centrepieces, will begin trimming their trees in the next few weeks and have their Christmas cocktail soirees on the calendar. 

So, what are the Christmas decorating trends for 2010?  Our Christmas homes are two very different styles, but both reflective of the mood of the Australian public right now.

Firstly, there is the return to the real glamour of a 1950s style Christmas with heavy golds, velvety reds and fir greens. This decadent style is inspired by the popular television phenomenon Mad Men, and the popularity of the domestic goddess over the past several years making her home a haven for her family and friends.

“When the publisher of Nashville Lifestyles magazine showed me “Love at First Bite: The Complete Vampire Lover’s Cookbook“ in her office one day, we both knew it would make a fabulous feature for their October issue.

I got started right away pulling together all things black, red, and antique silver. We wanted to avoid anything too “Halloweeny” and tried to focus on chic and dark. The house we shot in had black ceilings, which really added to the dark and spooky atmosphere.

I used black velvet fabric as the table cover, topped with antique candelabras and tall red candle sticks. Candles were a main element of the table to add a spooky glow. To make the red dripped candles, I dripped a red candle on top of a white candle – and done! Placing mirrors down the center of the table created a ghastly reflection and a steady base for our candle sticks.

Using the Vampire Lovers’ Cookbook as my inspiration, I designed menus for each table setting including “Steak Through the Heart” and “Devil Hair Pasta“.

Our local Whole Foods has an amazing pastry chef who created some simple chocolate ganache mini cupcakes topped with red “blood drops“.

Then I used Martha Stewart’s Vampire Wine Labels to adorn bottles of red wine.

I’m totally inspired!

Halloween in Australia is a much different experience than our friends have in America.  We don’t have a tradition of trick or treating (although you might be lucky enough to live in an apartment complex or street that organises a safe trick or treating adventure for kids), so the best way to have all the fun of Halloween without any of the fuss of knocking on doors is to host a Halloween themed party at your home.  Over the next few weeks we will offer up some of our best ideas on Halloween parties perfect for Australians who love to spook and be scary!

Which Witch is Which Halloween Party Theme

Witches feature heavily in fairytales, modern stories and traditional legends such as Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, Meg & Mog and Bewitched.  Just about everyone has a favourite witch no matter what your age, so why not host a Which Witch is Which Halloween party this year to celebrate witches – good, bad and ugly!

Invitations

Invite guests to your Which Witch is Which halloween party with a Halloween or Witch themed party invitation.  We love the Spooky Spider invitations at Pink Frosting’s online party shop.  Use some spooky wording to start the theme rolling with your guests:

Which witch is which?  Only our creepiest guest knows!

Do you cackle with an apple?  Do you wriggle your nose?

Put on your witches hat, hop on your broom,

Decorations

Games

Play “Which Witch is Which” – the guessing game that brings to life your favourite witches from childhood stories and movies.  To prepare, simply create some cryptic witch clues (remember that if the players are little kids, keep the questions really simple and based on fairytales and childhood stories) and have plenty of witch prizes ready for those who win the game.  You could also play “Celebrity Witch” where five guests wear a witches hat with the name of a famous witch on it, and they have to guess who they are!

For little kids, we love the idea of a witches broom race.  Here are some fun ideas from Celebrations:

• Simply have a starting line and finishing line. The little witches line up in “broom riding position.” The have to race at the sound of the whistle but here’s the catch – no hands allowed on the broom.
• Three-legged broom race – it’s the same concept as a regular three-legged race except the brooms are tied together instead of the legs! Break the witches off into teams of three and tie their three brooms together. Each team races to the finish line and the team that has all three girls at the end, wins! **This is great for building team work as the girls have to go at the same speed and help each other.
• If you don’t have much room, put some funky Halloween tunes on your iPod and hand each girl a broom. Tell them they have to make up a 30 second choreographed dance incorporating their brooms. The witch with the most bewitching moves is the winner.

Food

Check out the fun Halloween Party dinner menus and ideas over at Hostess Blog.  We particularly love the Boo Spaghetti, Slithering Snake Sandwich, Eyeball Taco Salad and the Ghost of Montecristo Sandwiches!  Serve “poisoned” Halloween cocktails, such as a Black Widow Martini:

2 oz black vodka
.5 oz Chambord Black Raspberry Liqueur
2 oz blackberry or grape juice
black licorice and sugar for garnish (optional)

Combine all ingredients in an ice-filled cocktail shaker. Shake well and strain into a sugar-rimmed martini glass. Garnish with black licorice and add a plastic black spider to the stem of the martini glass.

Finish with some spooky Halloween cupcakes and you have a feast to tame the hungriest witches!

Spring has sprung and it’s time to clean out your wardrobe for the Summer season ahead and gather your fellow fashionistas for an afternoon tea with a difference!  Ask your friends to bring along their unwanted clothes and accessories for a clothes swapping party.  You’ll enjoy a fun afternoon with friends, and you may even find some fabulous new fashion statements!  Here’s our guide to a practical (you get to swap clothes with your fashionable mates) and fun (what better way to spend an afternoon than with champagne and your friends trying on clothes) celebration for no particular reason at all, or in place of a traditional baby shower, kitchen tea, hen’s party or even a Pink Ribbon fundraising party:

Invitations

Your friends will love receiving handmade invitations through the mail.  Try making your own invitations by adorning a plain piece of coloured cardboard with a little origami dress folded from beautiful paper.  Inside, inspire your guests with some cute words, such as:

Spring has sprung!  The grass is green!
The sun does shine!  It’s time to clean!
Fling wide your wardrobe, take a peak
It’s time to find that space you seek.
Those jeans too big, that skirt too small,
That dress that’s never fit at all;
That impulse buy you’ve never worn;
Those shoes (unscuffed), that shirt (untorn).
Let’s toast the darling buds of spring -
A clothes swap’s the thing – not shopping!
Wash and repair them, and join me
For tea, with sweet treats so tasty -
And a glass of bubbly!

Setting the scene

On arrival, ask your guests to unpack their clothes and accessories and place them in categories such ‘dresses’, ‘skirts’ and ‘handbags’.  You may like to print little category cards featuring coat hanger images and secure them to the walls around your lounge room with miniature clothes pegs and a bit of blutack.  Then hand your guests a glass of champagne and usher them into the afternoon tea room.

Decorating and styling

Set the table for a decadent afternoon tea treat.  For a whimsical table, start with crisp white linen as your backdrop and then layer vintage plates, cups, jugs and teapots with napkins in a riot of floral patterns.  Visit an antiques fair, your local flea market or (with permission!) raid your grandma’s cupboards to pick up plenty of vases and teapots to add personality to your table.  Or, if you don’t fancy scouring the local garage sales, choose a selection of sweet party themed plates, cups and napkins from Pink Frosting.
