If you believe everything you read on Twitter, Shane Warne has confirmed that he is engaged to Liz Hurley - a confirmation by Twitter seems to be as cheap and nasty as the engagement itself. Don’t get me wrong, I have nothing but admiration for Shane Warne as a class act sportman and I actually always liked Liz Hurley, but the way this pair has made their courtship, relationship, arguments, break-ups, make-ups and affair so public has done nothing for me at all. I love a romance, but can’t help but feel that the publicity this pairing has garnered has spurred on the romance and it feels to me to be less authentic.

It’s reported that Shane proposed to Liz in a crowded restaurant at St Andrews in Scotland, which sounds romantic, and that all the other customers rose to clap the couple when Liz accepted the proposal. Shane confirmed the engagement on Twitter, which seemingly has overtaken texting as his favourite form of communication.

Liz’s last wedding, to Arun Nayer was one of the most elaborate celebrity weddings ever, with dual ceremonies in India and the UK and millions of dollars spent on the celebrations, and one of the most beautiful weddings I had seen. The ceremonies, while over the top, seemed romantic and very elegant – with wedding decorations that melded the two cultures. What’s in store this time? Plastic fantastic. I can’t help but feel that it won’t be in the same league.

Happy Celebrating!

As this is a leap year, traditionally this means it’s AOK for a lady to ask their beau for their hand in marriage. Long ago, society looked down on women who proposed marriage, rather than wait for their man to pop the question. When the rules of courtship were stricter, women were only allowed to pop the question on one day every four years. That day was February 29th.

It is believed this tradition was started in 5th century Ireland when St. Bridget complained to St. Patrick about women having to wait for so long for a man to propose. According to legend, St. Patrick said the yearning females could propose on this one day in February during the leap year. The first documentation of this practice dates back to 1288, when Scotland passed a law that allowed women to propose marriage to the man of their choice in that year. They also made it law that any man who declined a proposal in a leap year must pay a fine. The fine could range from a kiss to payment for a silk dress or a pair of gloves.

So, to celebrate this wonderful tradition, Australia Entertains will host 29 days of romance from 1-29 February and we’d love you to contribute by sending us your romantic proposal stories, your wedding day stories or your anniversary stories… actually anything romantic. Make sure you’re happy to have your story and pics featured on our website.

Send your stories to kathryn@pinkfrosting.com.au. I look forward to hearing from you!

Unfortunately, I don’t have a perfect proposal story of my own… and it is my own fault. I jumped the gun and badgered my gorgeous husband (boyfriend at the time) about marriage only a couple of weeks before his planned romantic proposal in an idyllic location. Instead, I managed a proposal in bed one Sunday morning, which wasn’t romantic, but I do suppose it did the trick! We have made up for the lack of romance since then with a beautiful wedding and the creation of a wonderful family. Anyway, enough about me…

I always ask my wedding clients to tell me their proposal stories and I am often in awe of the creativity of the grooms. I’ve heard stories of helicopter rides to deserted beaches, sweet picnic proposals and public proposals on radio.

David Tutera is one of my inspirations for planning parties. He is a guru of entertaining, party planning and wedding styling in the US. In his gorgeous book, A Passion for Parties, David describes a romantic fireplace picnic for two which is perfect as a winter proposal idea.

David started by scattering rose petals all around the room along with fifty candles of various sizes and shapes offering a flickering golden hue. Large down pillows were placed in front of the fireplace for comfort in front of the roaring fire. Keeping the spirit of romance, the catering was erotic and sensual. David served strawberries with chocolate fondue, bottles of bubbly, exotic cheeses, caviar, pate and grapes.

Another of our sources of inspiration is The Knot. They describe 100 ways to pop the question. Now if you can’t find inspiration here, there’s something wrong! Whilst I’m not so sure about this one,

# Take the stage! Get in touch with the stage manager of an appropriately themed production and propose after the cast’s curtain call (the stage manager will prep everyone and get you in position). Some people have proposed after I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change, a musical revue about relationships running in several cities.

there are some wonderful alternatives you could use as a starting point to plan your proposal.

Happy Celebrating!
