Two Love Birds Inspired Wedding Cake

I adore the Two Love Birds party supplies at Pink Frosting for weddings, engagements, bridal showers and kitchen teas.  The bird icon in black with a stunning vine and leaf pattern on a Tiffany blue background is a standout range for these celebrations – unusual, sweet and truly sophisticated.

I was contacted by a customer last week who loved the range so much that she used the design as inspiration for creating her final cake for her decorating course at Planet Cake.   I am completely in awe and in love with this stunning cake that Veronica turned out.

Two Love Birds Cake 2

Veronica Turner started cake decorating about 3 years ago, after the birth of her second child.  She has completed 7 courses with Planet Cake, and since has evolved to making wedding & specialty cakes for family and friends. Veronica’s long term plan is to have her own business making wedding and specialty cakes, hopefully within a 3 year period.  We are so excited about Veronica’s talent and look forward to her career change in the future… and plenty more gorgeous inspirational images of her cake designs.

Best Pink Frosting Recipe in the World

I have been testing pink frosting recipes for years.  Surprised?  The very reason I chose to name Pink Frosting, Pink Frosting is because pink frosting reminds me of special events, very happy occasions and fun moments with my nearest and dearest.  I’ve tried and tested so many pink frosting recipes over time, the calories would make you burst at the seams.  Now, I am declaring the best pink frosting recipe in the world is found!  Thank you, finally, Smitten Kitchen!

Swiss Buttercream

For a wedding cake (or most of one, depending on the size)
2 cups of egg whites (approx. 12 large)
3 cups sugar
5 cups butter, softened (2 1/2 pounds, 10 sticks)
1 tablespoon vanilla extract

For a 9-inch cake (plus filling, or some to spare)
1 cup sugar
4 large egg whites
26 tablespoons butter, softened (3 sticks plus 2 tablespoons)
1 teaspoon vanilla extract

For the tiniest amount, if you’re just practicing (or enough to cover and fill the 4-inch cake pictured)
1/4 cup sugar
1 large egg white
6 tablespoons butter, softened
1/4 teaspoon vanilla

Whisk egg whites and sugar together in a big metal bowl over a pot of simmering water. Whisk occasionally until you can’t feel the sugar granules when you rub the mixture between your fingers.

Transfer mixture into the mixer and whip until it turns white and about doubles in size. (Here’s a tip: when you transfer to the mixer, make sure you wipe the condensation off the bottom of the bowl so that no water gets into the egg whites. This can keep them from whipping up properly.)

Add the vanilla.

Finally, add the butter a stick at a time and whip, whip, whip.

Deb note: Do not have a panic attack when this takes a while to come together (though I did every time). One super-large batch took 15 minutes, but it did and will come together. Patience, young Jedis.

And, to make it pink:  drop in slowly, very slowly, red food colouring until you get your desired pink shade.  Voila!

The gorgeous pink frosting cupcake mosaic is from Sweet Jessie’s sweet blog.

Cake of the Week: Very Different Cakes

If you’re anything like me, you know a party needs three things – delicious wine, great decorations, and cake. Being the fashionista that I am, there’s never going to be a plain cake at my parties! I want my cake to be memorable, especially if it’s for a special occasion.  And not that I have anything against iced flowers, but I want decorations that reflect my personal style.

I want whimsy.  I want glamour.  I want GLITZ!

I am so excited about the new range of cake decorations and cake bling from famous Los Angeles cake decorators, Very Different Cakes, now stocked at Pink Frosting for Australian and New Zealand brides and entertainers.

Now, I definitely can’t afford their cakes (and, given we live in Australia not in Los Angeles, I can’t get them anyway), but I can easily afford their Swarovski crystal cake jewels. You can customise a monogram or have hearts, flowers, and assorted “garden friends,” starting from just five dollars.

Now, that’s fashionable food we can all afford!

Cake of the Week: That 70’s Cake

Filed under: Cake of the Week, Entertaining, General, Party Themes, Wedding Cakes — Kathryn @ 9:57 pm

In creating this 70’s rolled fondant cake, baker Rosemary Galpin says she was influenced by a recently purchased piece of fabric that “was the same print I used to sew my first dress in 1972!” Serve this whimsical confection at a backyard wedding, a birthday bash (for someone born or groovin’ in the 70’s) or a funky anniversary. Little bite-sized pieces of art.  These simple, stunning lemon yellow and pink embossed couture cupcakes by The Cupcake Company in Brisbane represent everything that is good in the world!  Sweet, aesthetically pleasing, delicate and so intricately decorated.  Made with passion and love.  I love Sharnel and Keren.  Their cupcakes are little bite-sized pieces of art.  I just wish Brisbane wasn’t so damn far away from Canberra, or that cupcakes travelled well!

Cake of the Week: Poppy Wedding Cake

Filed under: Cake of the Week, General, Wedding Cakes, Weddings — Kathryn @ 5:34 am

I’ve been a fan of the work of Sydney’s Polka Dot Cookies and Cakes for a while, but I only just revisited the website when my fellow blogger, Bonnie from Amour Amour gave them her thumbs up as Sydney’s number one wedding cake supplier.  I drooled when I saw how glamorous, over the top stunning and colourful this beautiful poppy cake is.  The poppy’s remind me of my grandfather who grew the most divine poppy’s in his garden when I was growing up.

Here’s what Bonnie has to say about Polka Dot Cookies and Cakes:

Speaking with Libby of Polka Dot Cookies and Cakes is an experience I can highly recommend! Libby’s passion for creating stunning cakes is inspiring and contagious. Her unique designs are a sight to behold. Libby’s attention to detail is second to none and the result is an exquisite masterpiece you won’t want to cut it… until you taste the mouth-watering flavours for yourself. Vanilla bean and white chocolate, Queen of Sheba chocolate torte, hazelnut ricotta torte, lemon and lavender with lemon buttercream, hazelnut praline, raspberries and cream, chocolate raspberry liqueur, banana, cranberry and white Chocolate, tropical carrot and Coconut.

Cake of the Week: Marie Antoinette Wedding Cake

I’ve been posting my cake of the week for some time now and while I love every single one of the cakes I’ve featured, this cake is going down as my new favourite.   This Marie Antoinette themed wedding cake by Cake As Art in San Francisco is a superb example of fine sugarcraft.

The wedding, held May 31st at the Marines Memorial in downtown San Francisco, was as coquettish as can be, with inspiration from Marie Antoinette’s lavish style. The cake is iced in pink butterceam and the scroll details are hand piped in buttercream and painted in gold. The cameos, bands and bow are made with fondant, painted bronze. The topper was transported all the way from the amazing patisserie, La Duree, in Paris.

It makes me seriously want to scream – “Let Them Eat Cake!”  Team this gorgeous cake with some other Marie Antoinette wedding theme style described over at Pink Frosting’s wedding inspiration pages.
